THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE UGLY!!!!

THE GOOD

Damion Easley with a huge 3-run pinch hit homer...

Pelfrey's first 3 innings...

Marlon with 3 hits...

Muniz and Sanchez with solid efforts...

THE BAD

We lost...

Pelfrey's 4th inning (well, not technically, since he didn't even manage to record an out in the 4th)

Joe Smith

David Wright went 0-4, and killed the rally in the first...

Our 3-4-5 hitters went a combined 0-11 last night...

THE UGLY

Just an overall bad loss, as we fall back out of first place... Probably the worst outing by a starter in over a month... The HR allowed by Smith really deflating after Easley had gotten us right back in the game...

Oh well... We move on, take the day off, see if anything happens on the trade front, and head to Houston to whoop up on the 'Stros!!!

I think the Fish are going to be very, very tough down the stretch. They are as perplexing and frustrating a team as I've ever seen. They do everything wrong, and yet seem to find a way to win more often than not; headscratching, indeed.

And can you imagine what it will be like if they get Manny, which it looks for all the world as if they will?????

I'm not at all confident going down the stretch with the bullpen we have. And Pedro has to hold up, and Maine has to rebound. Our offense is still streaky, and if we don't add a corner outfielder with the right hand bat, I think we're living dangerously. Not to mention revamping the bullpen, at least partially.

Jerry goes to Joe Smith way too often.

Deb, I hear your concerns about Da Fish. I really don't think they can keep it up. I know what you are thinking...that's people have been saying about them ALL YEAR!

And that's true...but I really can't for the life of me see how they can win this division when the ONLY thing they do well is hit homeruns.

Of course, knowing the unpredictability of our beloved sport, I could be totally wrong. But I still strongly believe it is going to come down to the Mets or Phillies...

'Course...a month form now I could be reading this with tears in my eyes...

Well, guys, I will say this -- the bullpen has now been exposed. When we don't get good starting pitching, we can't rely on the pen, and that's been pretty much proven. The starters have to get us into the seventh inning, or as Lee Mazzilli says, "give me 20 outs," or else we're in trouble.

And Brian, I just don't think the Marlins are going away. And if they get Manny, they REALLY aren't going away. They have good pitching, a pretty good offense, and their lousy defense just goes to show you that two out of three ain't bad. Plus, they are young, hungry and anxious to prove their worth.

I have no reason to believe that the Marlins aren't for real...

They've hung in this long, and they'll only be getting better, getting back Josh Johnson, Anabel Sanchez, and now possibly getting Manny...

I think it's gonna be a tight 3-team race down to the end.

What HE (dingo) said.

The rest of your guys are poopyheads, nyuck nyuck nyuck!

Although it IS now looking as if Manny's staying put, which if he does, is certainly no surprise. There have been rumors about Manny leaving the Red Sox since almost before he got there, lol.

I remember those days Deb...we tend to have the opposite problem today...

>They have good pitching,<

Debatable...

>a pretty good offense<

I would say slightly more than pretty good. Which is why Miami baffles me...were are their fans???

>they are young, hungry and anxious to prove their worth.<

And that is the wild card...

We will know in a month or so where it will take them...

And the whole Manny thing? I will believe he is leaving when I see him wearing the colors of a new team. Guy is an ass...

I really like the Marlins starting pitching, Brian; I think it's way underrated, and I think that's partially so because it's so young and it is, of course, a Florida team, lol.

Where are their fans? I don't believe they really HAVE a firm fan base; the fans will come out to support them in the postseason, and come out in droves; otherwise, they tend to view the regular season simply as an exercise for determining whether or not they'll make the postseason. In other words, it ain't baseball territory down there.

It seems as if Rays fans don't look at things the same way; that phenomenon seems to occur only in southern Florida, for whatever reason.

I do think part of the problem is the stadium, but of course the Rays' Stadium isn't much better, although it is a domed Stadium, which in Florida is a MUST for baseball, imo. But it is well and truly the fugliest Stadium in baseball, also imo. Still, I think the venue is a huge problem for the Marlins in attracting and keeping fans.

Florida in general just isn't a baseball state. They loooooove their college football more than anything else.

Yeah, last night was a tough loss, but Rickey's just glad that the Fish and the Phillies ain't getting Manny. Or that Omar hasn't pulled the trigger on any dumb deals.
