THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE UGLY...

THE GOOD

A solid win for the Metsies... Excellent starting pitching by Ollie, who by the way, is making up for a poor start to the season, and earning back all those millions... If he finished the season strong, I imagine he's in line for a contract worth about $15 million a year...

DELGADO GO BOOOOOM!!!

I mean, seriously, what more can ya say... This guy has been on fire for a month now, and is the single biggest reason for the Mets improvement over that time... I dare say he may even be our best option for next year, and I and many others were ready to run him outta town just 6 weeks ago!!!

Nick Evans looked solid last night... Nothing great, but it's gotta be tough on a kid called up from AA to sit on the bench most nights...

Reyes went 3-5, and other than getting caught at 3rd base on the opening play of the game, had another Jose-type game...

Bullpen did a nice job last night with Heilman and Wags... Certainly looks as if they're stretching out Heilman to be the long man, or at least the guy who can come in and eat up a few innings, something they've lacked the last year and a half, since Darren Oliver left...

THE BAD

Heilman walking 2 in the 7th to make things interesting, but again, nice job recovering there...

Kinda hard to start the game with 3 straight doubles and only have a 1-0 lead, but the Mets managed to find a way to do it!!!

THE UGLY

Even the ugly ain't that bad today... I'll go with Johnny Maine, diagnosed with a mild strain in his rotator cuff, but that really doesn't sound TOO bad, and it looks like at most he'll miss one start, which is actually not that bad considering we have some off days in the week ahead... May not even necessitate calling somebody up to take his spot in the rotation...

Wow, another GBU entry! You go, ding dong!!! :)

Anyway, now that Texeira is gone bye bye to Anaheim (out of the league, thankfully), it's looking more and more as if Delgado might be back next year. About which I'm extremely ambivalent, to say the least.

I'm also a little more worried about Maine than you are; he's looked distinctly uncomfortable out there all year, pretty much, and I think there may be some underlying physical issues with him.

Do you think there's the slightest chance the Mets can re-sign Ollie? Or that they will? I have to tell you, it would scare me to pay Up And Down Ollie the kind of money you're talking about here. Still, there are pitchers out there who imo have far less to offer than Ollie and are making substantial monies. And at least we know Ollie can handle New York.

Well, I suppose Tex could still hit Free Agency, but I'd think that Anaheim would look to lock him up, so I wouldn't count on us getting him... Not that I really was anyways...

Maine is a concern to me, yeah... I don't think it's anything MAJOR, but sometimes just being slightly uncomfortable can have a big impact on how one looks out there...

Maybe it's something he can take care of with offseason surgery? I don't really know how long that might knock him out for though...

Ollie is looking more and more like he needs to be re-signed, and given what other starters are getting ($8 million for Eaton, $11 million for Meche, $12 million for Vincente Padilla), I really think that some team would offer him 5 years, $70-$75 million, and that we should probably match that...

If we lose Ollie, we're left with Johan, Pelfrey and Maine going into next year... I don't think Pedro will be back... And maybe a guy like Jon Niese can fill the 5th spot in the rotation, but still need one more starter, so either re-sign Ollie, or be prepared to spend that kinda money on another FA starter...

Very good analyses, ding dong!

The only wrench in the works with regard to Ollie is the fact that Scott Boras is his agent. That alone is a scary proposition, especially considering his prior relationship, or lack thereof, with the Mets.

And how about the Manny to the Phillies rumors? Could you just SEE that? Yikes, I can't! No WAY Manny would be able to cut playing in Philly, imo.

DINGOMETS said...

Don't see Manny to the Phillies... A new report on ESPN.com says

"One Phillies official told ESPN.com there was "no substance whatsoever" to that Manny talk"

- Which of course means that there might be substance to it, or there might not be!!!

I just don't see it happening...

As for Ollie, yeah Boras is his agent, but we have dealt with Boras before and will deal with him again... I'd be more concerned over the reports and suggestions (though I've never seen Ollie directly quoted here) that he'd rather pitch on the West Coast...

"I'd rather pitch on the west coast" more often than not translates into "Pay me enough, and I'll pitch in hell." lol

They always say it isn't about the money, but in 99.999999999% of cases, of COURSE it's about the money. See: Mike Hampton, lol.

DINGOMETS said...

That's what I think too...

And there's no reason we should be outbid by anyone here...

Mike Hampton did it for the schools!

Also, here's hoping no front office is going, "Well, Adam Eaton is worth $8 mil a year," as a way to judge salary.

Mike Hampton - Spokesperson For Schools Across America *snicker.* Yeah, right.... lol.

I just have a funny feeling that the Mets won't be able to re-sign Ollie. I simply don't think the Mets are in his top three choices, for some reason, and with The Vulture as his agent, and the pitching market being what it is, it's not going to be easy.

DINGOMETS said...

All it takes is ONE front office to decide that Ollie is worth $75 million, and if he's after the money, we either have to match or beat that offer, or we lose him...

Ollie may not be worth $15 million a year, just like Zito wasn't worth $18 million a year...

As long as there's a fool with a checkbook, the players will be there to take advantage...

Deb said...

And if the fools with the checkbooks don't come across, the players will be there to yell "collusion!" lol

I still believe that a HARD salary cap is the way to go, perhaps in conjunction with a minimum payroll requirement. I know, I know, two things that right now are probably practical impossibilities in baseball.
