The Party's Over...

...it's time to call it day, a Shea, another season.

And all I can think to myself right now is, boy, they deserve it, those Mets, but boy, Mets fans sure don't. They surely don't.

I hope the powers that be are paying attention to the last two years. And I hope they are realizing, slowly but surely, that they simply can't bring back the same team next year; that it's time for some serious soul-searching changes to this organization and this team, and that it's time to give Mets fans something to do but shed tears on the last day of the season.

That's it, that's all, I just can't say anymore right now. I think I said it all before, anyway. And taken a lot of heat for it.

And right now, as sure as the sun will come up tomorrow, the Brewers will be playing October baseball, and the Mets will be going home, I wish I was wrong, I really do. Because you, the Met fan, deserve so much more....so much more.

Rickey, I got news for ya, buddy -- it has sucked to be a Mets fan since Game 7, NLCS, 2006.

And this is just the beginning, I'm afraid, of a whole new era of mediocrity in Metsland.

In fact, perhaps I'll rename the blog -- Mediocrity, Thy Name Is Mets. *Snicker*

The last game failure, the Marlins celebrating on the field for a little too long as if they actually won something. The scarlett "C" on all these guys' uniforms. A huge bucket of water thrown on what should've been a tremendous ceremony.

Were you really asking for this, Deb? Is this really what you wanted to happen? I guessing the answer is "of course not." Because as much as you might dislike the current bunch, the "choke" label is now stuck firmly on this team and a cloud is already hanging over the new stadium, and nothing short of a World Series championship will ever wipe them away.

And most of the key faces will still be there next year: the stupid ownership, Minaya, Manuel (I give him a 90% shot at coming back, and even though it's hardly his fault, he still is smeared like all the rest), the same core players that couldn't muster more than 5 runs in 3 games. The same mind-numbing sound bites from David Wright, who has started getting called "the Mets version of ARod" in a deregatory way (I would never have thought that being compared to one of the greatest offensive players of all time could be a bad thing.) Oh sure, the pen will be well cleaned out, but that was going to happen regardless.

So here we are. Shea goes out not with a bang, but a whimper. And we're stuck with the memory for the rest of our Mets rooting lives. I sure as hell never wanted that.

Finally, one last quote from our good friend Elvis Costello:

One day you're going to have to face
The deep dark truthful mirror
And it's going to tell you things that I still love you too much to say
The sky was just a purple bruise, the ground was iron
And you fell all around the town until you looked the same

The same eyes, the same lips, the same lie from
your tongue trips
Deep dark, deep dark truthful mirror

Oh well. Fuck you, Mets, see ya next year.

Of course this isn't what I wanted, James... I just knew, in my heart of hearts, that more likely than not, this is what we Mets fans were going to get.

And the times, they ain't a-changing, not in Metsland, not anytime soon. Not with this current ownership, and not with this GM, and certainly NOT with this current group of players.
